As a parent, it can be overwhelming and concerning when your child is experiencing difficulties with their emotions, behaviors, or learning. In some cases, seeking an assessment for your child may be necessary to better understand their needs and provide appropriate support.

The assessment process involves gathering information about a child's cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning through various tests, interviews, and observations. This evaluation can help identify any underlying issues such as learning disabilities, developmental delays, behavioral disorders, or emotional concerns. If you are considering an assessment for your child, here are a few key points to keep in mind:

  1. Understanding the Process: It's essential to have a clear understanding of what the assessment entails. The assessment process typically involves initial intake interviews, completion of assessment tools by the child, parents, teachers, behavioral observations, and feedback sessions to discuss the results and recommendations.

  2. Finding the Right Provider: It's crucial to select a qualified and experienced mental health professional to conduct the assessment. Look for someone who specializes in assessments for children and has a good understanding of child development.

  3. Preparing Your Child: Depending on their age, it's essential to prepare your child for the assessment process. Explain to them in an age-appropriate manner what to expect during the evaluation and reassure them that it is a helpful process to understand their strengths and challenges better. We will assist you!

  4. Providing Honest Information: During the assessment, be open and honest about your child's behaviors, emotions, and any concerns you may have. Providing accurate information will help the assessor make a more precise evaluation and develop appropriate recommendations.

  5. Understanding the Results: Once the assessment is complete, Tara will provide you with a detailed report that outlines the findings, diagnoses (if any), and recommendations for intervention or support. Take the time to review the results carefully, ask questions if needed, and discuss the next steps with Tara. Often times, this includes very specific interventions to utilize in counseling, at school, and at home.

Your child's mental health and well-being are our top priorities, and we are here to help every step of the way!
